How Restoring a building can help restore a rural town

Restoration Promotes Economic & Community Development

With the start of a new year, it’s a great time to reflect on the significance of bringing new life to the Oneida Stake Academy (OSA) Cultural Center. The historical renovation and restoration of the OSA is beneficial not only for the LDS culture, but also for our local economy and community. Here are three practical reasons why:

A renovated cultural center will revive the community connection.
The new OSA will be a center for community and culture, bringing together members of our rural town from all walks of life. It will provide opportunities for residents to become more active and increase their quality of life through events like art shows, cultural heritage days and other celebrations. As a new venue for weddings, receptions and private parties, the OSA will support personal and social development.

Historic buildings attract people.
Historic buildings, such as the OSA, give both tourists and residents a glimpse into the aesthetic and cultural history of a town. Having the renovated OSA at the center of the town will draw tourists to Preston and encourage other small business owners to set up shop here. Tourists find older buildings interesting and the opening of new shops and restaurants could spark the sort of small town revitalization that occurred in Sisters, OR and Rock Springs, WY.

A historical renovation renews hometown pride.
Due to their involvement in the preservation and restoration of the OSA, whether through fundraising, actual labor or promoting awareness, Preston residents have become excited to see and experience the end result of the project. The renovation process is connecting people with the town, its history and each other, while at the same time driving a renewed sense of Preston pride. When everyone rolls up their sleeves and works together, they feel like they have a shared ownership in the successful outcome of the OSA project.

Recognizing the importance of the OSA renovation to Preston’s revitalization, we are excited to see how the new cultural center will bring opportunities for economic development and community engagement.
